ADDICTION TREATMENT · MILFORD, CT
Addiction is a medical condition. Treatment should address it like one.
At CMHS, we approach addiction and substance use with the clinical rigor it requires — combining therapy, psychiatric care, and an honest look at what's driving the pattern.
UNDERSTANDING ADDICTION
More than a choice.
Addiction changes the brain. It alters how the reward system works, how decisions get made, and how a person responds to stress, discomfort, or even ordinary pleasure. Over time, continued use isn't simply about wanting to — it's about a nervous system that has reorganized itself around a substance or behavior.
Substance use disorders rarely exist in isolation. Anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, and chronic pain are among the most common co-occurring conditions — and when they go untreated, they significantly increase the likelihood of relapse. Understanding what's underneath the use is as important as addressing the use itself.
Recovery is possible. With the right support — one that treats the person, not just the pattern — people can and do build stable, meaningful lives.
THE CMHS DIFFERENCE
Treating addiction means treating what's driving it too.
Many treatment programs address substance use without seriously engaging the mental health conditions that sustain it. When the underlying anxiety, depression, or trauma goes unaddressed, the pressure to use remains — and the likelihood of relapse stays high.
At CMHS, your therapist and psychiatrist are in the same practice. If there's a co-occurring condition involved, we can evaluate and treat it directly — not as a separate track, but as part of a coordinated plan. That's what comprehensive care actually means.
HOW WE HELP
What addiction treatment at CMHS looks like.
We work with people dealing with alcohol use, prescription drug misuse, cannabis dependency, and other substance use concerns — always in the context of what else is going on.
Individual therapy
Our therapists use evidence-based approaches — including motivational interviewing and CBT for substance use — to help you understand the patterns driving use, develop coping strategies, and build toward sustainable change.
Psychiatric evaluation and medication management
Our psychiatrists and APRNs evaluate for co-occurring conditions and can manage medications when they're part of the treatment plan — in direct coordination with your therapist.
CMHS is not a detox or residential program
We provide outpatient mental health and psychiatric care. If a higher level of care is needed first, we can help coordinate a referral and support your transition back to outpatient treatment.
